Open plan and anti vandal toilet refurb at Academy

Overview:

Focus Washrooms worked with Seahaven Academy during the summer holidays to complete a full refurbishment of their boys and girls washrooms. This project aimed to significantly improve staff supervision within the washrooms, fostering a safer and more secure environment for students.

Background:

The original design concept was developed by Focus Washrooms in collaboration with the school. Following an external tender process managed by Barker Associates, we secured the project and worked closely with Barker Associates to ensure a seamless delivery.

Project design:

The refurbishment involved a comprehensive overhaul of the traditional boys' and girls' washrooms. Entrance doors were removed, and existing openings were widened to maximise visibility from the main corridor. Strategically placed windows further enhanced the line of sight, offering staff a clear view into the washrooms.

The layout underwent significant changes, prioritising student privacy and functionality. Urinals in the boys' washroom were removed to accommodate an increased number of cubicles. High-quality Trovex total privacy cubicles were installed throughout, providing essential privacy in the newly opened-up washrooms.

New plasterboard ceilings and lighting were installed - plasterboard ceiling ensure that ceiling tiles cannot be used to hide items - along with durable solid grade laminate full-height IPS ducts. Stylish and practical vanity units were incorporated and sheet vinyl flooring for ease of maintenance. All walls and ceilings were decorated with fresh paint, creating a clean and bright atmosphere. A complete plumbing upgrade ensured optimal functionality. Additionally, sprinkler heads were refitted for continued fire safety compliance.

Challenges:

We faced a tight project timeframe of just 5.5 weeks during the summer holidays. We rose to the challenge, meticulously planning and executing the refurbishment within the allotted time.

Special features:

Recognising past challenges with vandalism, we installed anti vandal low-profile taps. These taps addressed the issue of students forcefully turning traditional taps, which which causes pipework damage and flooding. See more on anti vandal taps here >>

Additionally, windows strategically placed on the corridor walls provided greater natural light and enhanced staff supervision, offering a valuable solution to potential bullying and unruly behaviour. See more about open plan washrooms here >>

The Result:

The improved visibility fosters a safer environment for students, while the modern design and functional amenities create a positive washroom experience. This successful project serves as another example of our collaborative approach and expertise in delivering exceptional washroom solutions within agreed timeframes.
