Changing room and shower refurbishment at college

Overview

Focus Washrooms undertook the extensive remodelling and refurbishment of the sports hall changing, shower and washroom facilities at Bishop’s Stortford College, one of Hertfordshire's leading independent schools. The comprehensive project reconfigured four existing changing rooms and a laundry room into two modern pupil changing rooms, a dedicated staff changing room with a toilet and an integrated laundry area within the staff zone.

The challenge: Complying with shared facilities regulations under tight schedules

Because the new showers were designed to serve both male and female pupils, the client required self-contained shower cubicles positioned directly off the main corridor. This layout ensured the facilities were accessible to all while remaining strictly in line with school shared facilities regulations.

Operationally, the project presented two distinct challenges. First, the sports hall remained in use during specific periods of the build due to an active holiday summer camp, meaning our site team had to operate with extreme care. Second, the project had a tight completion window to ensure everything was fully operational before the students returned from their summer holidays.

The design: Reconfigured layouts and robust materials

Our design team addressed these challenges by creating a completely reconfigured floor plan that prioritised pupil privacy, ease of access and heavy-duty durability.

Overcoming operational site restrictions

To ensure complete safety during the summer camp, our installation team managed site logistics with careful precision. The project commenced with the complete demolition of all existing internal walls before rebuilding high-performance partition walls, updating the electrical systems, fitting advanced new air extraction units and installing clean new ceilings.

Balancing durability with pupil safety

To deliver a premium, low-maintenance environment that complies with rigorous school health and safety standards, we selected specialised commercial materials:

  • Sense of hygiene and safety: high-performance hygienic wall cladding was installed to provide a smooth, impact-resistant surface that is exceptionally easy to clean and sanitise.

  • Design features for safety: advanced non-slip vinyl flooring was laid across all wet and dry areas to minimise slip hazards for active pupils.

  • Expert facility integration: existing appliances were seamlessly worked into the new laundry room layout alongside a newly installed laundry sink setup, heavy-duty changing benches, modern sanitaryware, commercial dispensers and certified fire doors at the room entrances.

The result: A successful premium school refurbishment

The sports hall transformation was completed successfully within the tight summer holiday window. By replacing the outdated layout with self-contained, compliant shower cubicles and robust changing areas, the college modernised its sports facilities to a premium standard.

The client was delighted with the finished project, which balances regulatory compliance with exceptional durability, and we look forward to working with the college on future refurbishment projects.
