Visitor toilet refurbishment at zoo
Overview
We refurbished 16 washrooms and 5 accessible washrooms at the two Aspinall Foundation parks – Port Lympne and Howletts.

During the design process, the client specified a bespoke patterned laminate for the vanity units and a bespoke green colour for the cubicles and duct panelling This meant the raw sheet material had to be manufactured in Italy which had a 12-week lead time, however, we managed to factor this change into the programme.

Working across nine different toilet blocks, spread out across the two sites, the project needed careful phasing to ensure there were customer toilets available at all times, and logistics planning to minimise movement of materials across the sites. At both sites, the project was split into two phases and each phase had to be complete and ready for the busy school holiday periods.

In all of the washrooms, refurbishment work started with a full strip out of the rooms, and to commence the new works, plaster boarding, skimming walls and decorating in a light green colour followed. New vinyl woodgrain flooring went down along with all new plumbing and lighting.
The solid-grade laminate components of cubicles, duct panels and vanity units were then installed in each washroom – across the two sites, 35 cubicles were installed altogether. Washroom accessories included: High-powered and efficient hand dryers, heaters, dispensers and radiator covers

Although this project was quite complex, it went well and the client was happy with the quality of installation and how we finished the works in line with the schedule.
