FAQs
-
The number of facilities required is determined by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) based on the maximum number of people expected to be at work at any one time. For example, a workplace with 1 to 5 employees requires at least one toilet and one washbasin, while a site with 26 to 50 people requires at least three of each. These numbers vary if you provide separate facilities for men and women or use urinals.
-
Employers must provide clean, well-lit and ventilated facilities with hot and cold running water. You are also required to provide soap and a suitable means of drying hands, such as paper towels or electric hand dryers. The design should include non-porous surfaces like tiled walls and waterproof flooring to ensure the area is easy to clean and maintain.
-
Ideally, separate rooms should be provided for men and women. If this is not possible, you must provide fully enclosed, lockable rooms that are intended for use by one person at a time. This ensures privacy and security for all staff members regardless of the total number of employees.
