Complete washroom refurbishment - Boys’, Girls’ and Accessible facilities

Project overview

Focus Washrooms was appointed to deliver a full refurbishment of the boys’, girls’ and accessible washroom facilities at Penwortham Primary School in Wandsworth.

The brief was clear: create modern, durable and easy-to-maintain facilities suitable for a busy primary school environment, while improving layout efficiency, hygiene standards and overall aesthetics.

The result is a bright, contemporary washroom scheme designed to withstand daily use while supporting a positive experience for pupils and staff.

The challenge

Like many primary schools, the existing facilities had become tired and difficult to maintain. Key objectives for the refurbishment included:

  • Increasing durability and longevity

  • Improving hygiene and cleanability

  • Delivering better layout efficiency

  • Creating a more uplifting environment through colour and design

  • Ensuring compliance in the accessible provision

The school required a practical solution that would perform reliably in a high-traffic setting, with minimal ongoing maintenance.

The solution

Focus Washrooms delivered a complete strip-out and refurbishment across:

  • Boys’ washroom

  • Girls’ washroom

  • Dedicated accessible WC

Cubicle systems

The project utilised the Trovex Washrooms Essential Cubicle range, configured between walls and in corner layouts.

  • 6 cubicles in the boys’ washroom

  • 5 cubicles in the girls’ washroom

  • Full-height duct panelling for a clean, integrated appearance

  • 1960mm door and division heights for privacy and durability

Solid Grade Laminate (SGL) was selected for its robustness, moisture resistance and impact strength - ideal for primary education environments.

Colour scheme

A bold yet balanced palette was chosen to create energy without overwhelming the space:

  • Caribbean Blue and Charcoal in the boys’ washroom

  • Peacock Blue and Charcoal in the girls’ washroom

  • Woodland Walnut feature finish within the accessible room

The use of strong accent colours helps create identity and vibrancy while the charcoal elements ground the design and conceal scuffing.

Wash stations

Both main washrooms feature:

  • Solid surface trough basins

  • 4-station vanity configurations

  • Integrated duct panelling to conceal services

Trough systems optimise space and simplify cleaning compared to individual basins - an important consideration in primary schools.

Sanitaryware

The scheme incorporated robust back-to-wall WCs with concealed cisterns and push-button flush plates ensuring:

  • Reduced tampering

  • Simplified maintenance access

  • A clean, streamlined aesthetic

Accessible provision

The accessible washroom was carefully reconfigured to provide compliant circulation space, grab rail positioning and durable finishes.

Accessible washroom refurbishment

The design ensures independence, safety and ease of use while maintaining consistency with the wider washroom scheme.

The outcome

The completed facilities are:

  • Bright and welcoming

  • Easy to clean and maintain

  • Built for long-term durability

  • Designed specifically for the demands of primary education

The strong colour accents combined with hard-wearing materials create an environment that feels modern and cared for - reinforcing pride in the school environment.
